![]() It's not nearly as complicated as some of the demos you'll see out there, which is a problem I have with a lot of "How I User Notion to Run My Life" videos. If you're interested, I made a video that shows how I use Notion to run my YouTube channel. It also means that it's hard to say that Notion is the absolute best at any one thing either, since it needs to work within these confines, but the package all together turns into something really special for a lot of people. iA Writer creates a clean, simple and distraction-free writing environment for when you really need to focus on your words. This can be intimidating, and it puts people off for sure. Its inexpensive and a great choice for bloggers and short-form writers. It has a bunch of different pieces and you can put them together however you want. Taking minimalism to the extreme, iA Writer may have the fewest built-in distractions of any writing app. Notion is a sort of Lego-style productivity service. Oh, and would you like to be able to link all of these together and be able to do things like turning your Kanban board into a calendar in a click? Yup, that's what Notion can do. Want to have a calendar or a todo list or a repository of your team's most important files? Yeah, it can do that too. Want to have a place to write your scripts or articles, and have it in a way that allows sharing and collaboration? Notion's got that too. Want to have a Kanban board with your team's tasks? Go right ahead. It's mobile apps are not great, but the power of Notion is that it allows you to do a bunch of things all in one place. Or we can see a Kanban board with the status of each article: On Deck In Progress To Review Published. We can see a calendar view that shows all the upcoming article due dates and publication dates. And we can view our editorial calendar in multiple ways. All that information stays with the article itself as it moves along the editorial process. Every day, iA Writer and thousands of other voices read, write, and share. I’m honored to be part of Shawn’s new project from the start, too: what’s the best Markdown writing app for the iPhone? Here’s my answer.Shawn Blanc writing for The Sweet Setup: The thing we love most about Notion (so far) is how we can manage each article with its own due dates, editorial status, content outline, and more. Over a million people use iA Writer as their quintessential writing machine. The Sweet Setup looks great, the initial line-up of recommendations is solid, and more will come in the next few weeks. With over a million apps now available on the App Store, people need a “ Wirecutter for apps” with recommendations thoroughly researched and written by people who test and use apps every day. I think that Shawn had the perfect idea at the right time. I didn’t want to post our articles in a reverse-chronological order that, by nature, would cause still-helpful reviews to be pushed out of view once new reviews get published. Additionally, by focusing on only the best, it means all the content on our site is relevant all the time. With the right theme, the iA Writer fonts, and some markdown extensions, you can set up VS Code or Atom to look a lot like iA Writer, and they give you the file manager on the left, plus folding text and a clickable outline, which I don’t believe you’ll get with Ghostwriter. Information Architects has released an updated version of iA Writer Pro which adds Dropbox sync and develops a new way to handle workflow state instead of placing documents inside different folders, now it changes the file extension. Here we will be recommending only the apps which are proven to be the best rather than new (I already write plenty about what’s new and cool over at and Tools & Toys). The Sweet Setup exists because I wanted a site that highlights the software that has proven to be the best, not necessarily the newest. ![]() Here’s how Shawn describes The Sweet Setup: The Sweet Setup, launched today, wants to recommend the best apps for iOS and OS X. When my friend Shawn told me about the project he was working on a few months ago, I was immediately excited by its potential and premise.
